Expert: Microsoft cuts loss by re-opening Windows for Russians

MOSCOW, Dec 28 (PRIME) -- Microsoft has no plans to return to Russia so far but it is trying to reduce its loss from leaving the country’s market by allowing local users to download Windows, Mobile Research Group senior analyst Eldar Murtazin told PRIME on Wednesday.

“Microsoft is not returning to Russia, it is impossible now because of sanctions. The company is quickly losing the Russian market, it is very important for them to make efforts to slow down this fall, reduce it to the minimum…It is an attempt to offset the loss the company now has in Russia,” Murtazin said.

Blocking of updates pushes people to look for alternatives, he added. In September, Microsoft restricted access for Russian users to updating their computers to its latest version Windows 11.

“It was a stupid decision, and now Microsoft is re-doing it to keep the Russian market,” the expert said.
